Tandragee Golf Club
Thursday 26th January 2012
Annual General Meeting

Usual formalities take place. Remembrance, apologies, agenda, reports, people in, people out, discussion. All good. With a shrug of his shoulders he stood, composed himself and delivered the golfing equivalent of the ‘State of the Union’ address. The room fell silent….

“Firstly Leslie (Warren, 2011 Captain), thank you for doing me the honour of choosing me as your Vice Captain and giving me the opportunity to follow in your footsteps.

I was surprised to be offered the vice-captaincy and initially quite unprepared, for like many of you, I was happy to play, have a pint and go home: letting the Club Council get on with it and having no personal responsibility.

I had attended AGMs over the years and thought to myself: “What a thankless task for anyone getting caught up with all that – they need their heads examined!” I had reservations, to put it mildly, but Leslie called at the house informing me of the Club’s critical financial position, amongst other areas of concern. I agreed to give his offer serious thought and consideration. On the empty beaches of Donegal I was thinking: “Do I want or need this?” I began to contemplate the personal implications: the responsibility associated with accepting the position. I talked this over with my wife, Lynda; as always she said: “You know I’ll be supportive of you whatever your decision, however, I know you very well and you never do things in half measures. If you decide to accept this offer our lives will certainly change.” Leslie assured me that a ‘Line in the sand’ letter sent out to members by (then) Captain James Magee would outline the seriousness of the Club’s financial position. From that it would be clear and evident to the members that the club was in a perilous financial position.

When accepting the role I strongly believed that amongst the most pressing issues was that of communication; not the website team’s weekly results, but keeping members informed of what was happening within the club on a regular basis. I thought this type of contact had been lacking. It had to be addressed: we had to do better. Well, we did. With the help of others, in particular The Editor (yes that’s me!), Mr Tandragee Telegraph himself, we quickly made progress on that front.

We immediately set to work on other matters: change was needed, with help from the Club’s Conveners we produced, under Leslie’s guidance, a radical plan.

I don’t, as they say, take prisoners. I have my own way: not everyone will like it, but that is me. Am I looking forward to this year as the Captain of this golf club? Yes, wholeheartedly. I’m 100% immersed and involved in all aspects of this club. I have pride and passion: I am humbled by the goodwill that I sense towards me and I will be proud to lead this club into 2012. With my commitment to you all, be assured that I will do my very best, my upmost for you and this club.

Afterall, this is not MY club, it is not THEIR (Convenors) club, it is OUR club.

I’m different from Leslie in many respects, after all, he is a good golfer! However, we both share a common desire: that being the interest and wellbeing of Tandragee Golf Club. I look forward to working with Leslie and the team to consolidate and secure the future of the club. I consider the condition of the course to be of primary importance with the restaurant coming a close second: I believe it is crucial to focus on good value meals for golfers in the back bar.

The financial climate, the current downturn and the depressed economy would seem to be with us for the foreseeable future. Our club, along with many others, is under threat; therefore it is important that we remain focused and vigilant, keeping our fingers on the pulse to monitor any adverse trends, reacting and managing changes as required. I’m confident we now have the necessary financial fire checks in place to monitor our progress. Thanks to Honorary Treasurer Sam Curran who has worked tirelessly on the Club’s behalf, organising and putting these administrative systems and markers in place. We now have monthly and quarterly templates to chart our progress, to check and make comparisons with previous periods.

This, of course, does not mean that we can easily solve any shortcomings or adverse problems that may arise, but at least we will be aware of them at the earliest opportunity. We can only cut expenditure by so much: 2011 showed how well the Club’s Conveners tackled their associated budgets and running costs. Under my watch this will continue; I will lead, question, provoke and do my utmost to ensure this Club’s future will be safeguarded. Undoubtedly, costs will continue to rise like rising water levels: it never goes away. Whilst there are savings that can be made, the most obvious areas of cost-cutting have been identified, actioned and those savings realised.

Membership numbers are crucial to growing the Club and this is another priority area for me. The additional cost of servicing a new member is zero. Therefore, every new, male, full member puts £600+ on the bottom line – in this year’s case it is an extra £600+ of operating profit. We have to be proactive in putting our best foot forward: this requires an innovative marketing strategy, requiring us to be sharp, fit and on the ball to attract new members.

At the same time we must do all we can to ensure that the course is kept in pristine condition. Our existing members must feel that their subscription represents good value. Council must endeavour to satisfy and further enhance the benefits of their membership together with seeking new members and disenfranchised members of other clubs. Subject to current membership renewals and available funds, along with assurances that we will be keeping a lid on expenditure, we hope to be able to have the opportunity for modest investment in the course. Focusing our attention on priority areas: immediate drainage, some path work and a forward plan for more detailed drainage improvements. It is a case of MAJOR IMPACT IMPROVEMENT AT MODEST COST.

Now you can play your part: please give us your support. No single or small group of people can do it all; it is a team effort. Members are the heartbeat of the Club and I ask you all to support the Council and Club. Within this club we have talented members having a broad base of skills, now is the time to ask yourselves: “What can you do”? Everybody at the club is an expert in some respect. You are versed, steeped in knowledge and experience. Can you donate this talent for a few hours a week, for an odd day? Together we can make a difference: we can’t do it without you. For example, the immediate Past Lady Captain, Annie Hall, is looking for assistance to complete the refurbishment of the Ladies’ Locker Room. It is essential that we all pull together as a team for the future of this club. With your backing we can go forward into 2012 making this a year that the Club can consolidate its financial position.

Twelve months ago I stood before you (2011 AGM); you may remember that after being introduced by Leslie I had a few words for you, our members. I spoke very briefly and stated that I was here to make a difference, to work on your behalf and that my actions would speak louder than any of my words. You have heard enough of my words:

I go to work on your behalf.”

Thank you
Malcolm Lynch
Captain, Tandragee Golf Club 2012

Experience the extraordinary effect these 2 bands had on the music of their day. In their hey-day of the 1970s these 2 giants of rock were the pioneers of the American West Coast Sound. Forty years later and the Illegals are paying tribute to that enduring sound. A brilliant night of vocal harmony, ringing accoustics and rockin’ guitars featuring timeless classics from Poco, Linda Rondstadt, Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as favourites from the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. The band features the vocal talents of Ireland’s Eurovision winner from 1993, Niamh Kavanagh.

Click the images (left or right) to see a snapshot video of the band in action!

Tickets are now available from the Club Office and Bar priced £10. More on a special restaurant menu for the evening to come later. Call 02838 841 272 to book tickets and or a table.

Eugene Weir and the greens team finally managed to get the greens cut last Monday 9th January for the first time since before Christmas! You won’t be surprised to hear that the Met Office has stated that this autumn has been the wettest since 1910! Credit to Eugene and his team for their efforts in dealing with this and keeping the course playable under these conditions.

Out on the course, work-in-progress includes tree removal behind the 5th green adjacent to the 6th tee-box. It has been a long term objective to address the problem of excessive wetness on the 4th fairway and this project is key to addressing this problem. Greenstaff are taking advantage of the reduction of fairway grass cutting and the unusual dry and humid weather by cutting, felling and removing all of these laylandii trees. A substantial number of these trees have been identified for removal which will improve sunlight access and wind-flow. It is hoped that this will along with other proposed work– i.e. examination of the drainage systems down by the pond, improve the underfoot ground conditions on the 4th fairway.

This work is expected to take 6-8 weeks and is therefore a major winter 2012 project. This work utilises Kyle Ellison’s particular expertise in tree felling and regeneration. Due to the location of these trees work can go ahead on without additional damage to the course and disruption to those wishing to play the winter 18 holes. This will in due course prove to be beneficial to all members.

The resultant timber will be sold to offset associated club costs and anyone interested in acquiring the timber should contact the office to enquire about availability. Removal of such will be as and when ground conditions are suitable. A number of valuable deciduous trees and Castlewellan Golds will be retained in this area.

This course work is being carried out ahead of our green staff in-house servicing programme for course machinery which is essential and as undertaken in-house, results in significant financial savings to the club as reflected in the accounts. This is evidenced when comparing this year’s costs against those from previous years.

Winter improvement projects completed to date include the removal of the dead hedge by the putting green and making good this area for season 2012. The removal of trees and improvements to drainage by the putting green has also been completed. Re-turfing projects by the tree at the 2nd green and alongside the path leading to the 6th tee-box have also been completed.

Some Timely Reminders

Please note that practice is not permitted on the course. Some members have been observed practising on the 1st and 2nd fairways and we would remind everyone that practice is only permitted in the designated practice area. This is especially important at this time of year when the course is vulnerable.

Pitchmark and divot repairing effects the very presentation of the course and it is in every golfers interest to help in this area. Winter golfers are asked to avoid the approach to all greens with carts and keep off the green aprons where possible. We are attempting to reduce wear and tear and compliance is in all members’ interests and would be gratefully appreciated by the green staff.

Ropes are in place to protect some particularly vulnerable areas of the course and again it is in members’ interest to comply with all guided routes and pathways for the winter.

Get by with a little help….from your friends

We have many examples of how members are volunteering to help Tandragee Golf Club, saving money and improving the facilities. We acknowledge George Forde’s help in locking the clubhouse on Mondays. He was also seen recently checking the performance of clubs buggies which have been out of action for some weeks. Gareth Hunter continues to work behind the scenes on keeping the clubs website relevant and up-to-date. Matt Laverty continues to provide a professional input and help in a range of areas while James Magee recently donated use of his small digger which along with green staffs assistance contributed greatly to the completion of some of the above mentioned winter improvement projects. James’ digger was also used to realign the step on the 17th tee-box along with a helping hand from Tom Uprichard and Brian Fyffe who were on hand to help sand and level this area. Billy Robinson continues to lock up on Tuesdays after bowls practice with Bar & Catering closing at 6pm during the winter, again saving on staffing costs occurred in previous years.

Your Golf Club Needs YOU!

The above are just a few examples of how people are helping out. We have a multitude of talent and expertise amongst our membership; in fact everyone is an expert in something. Do you have an area of expertise or a talent that could help the club? And would you be willing to join the others in lending a hand from time to time? If so, please let us know. The evidence is that such volunteering, however small, improves the facilities and saves us money. Again we all benefit. As an example, until such times as we can refurbish the clubhouse, we need to mend and make do. There is some cloth and seating repairs required – anyone with such skills that can lend some time to this, again greatly appreciated.

2011 has been a fantastic year on and off the course for Tandragee. We have met very challenging economic conditions head on and I’m delighted to announce that in the annual report due to be published in January, we will be posting positive news on the financial position of the club. While we accept that we will continue to face tough economic times ahead, we are able now to move forward and look into the future with an altogether more positive view. I would like to thank all our members, staff and Council who have helped to contribute to this success and I look forward to continuing to work with you all next year in my role as outgoing Captain. I wish our incoming Captain Malcolm Lynch every success for 2012 and I know you will all give him your full support. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Regards, Leslie Warren, Captain.

We would to acknowledge the support of former Captain James Magee who through his landscaping business donated a considerable quantity of surplus rolls of grassed turf. These have been utilised to make good several well worn areas in particular the pathway towards the 6th tee box. This necessitated the digging out of the clay base, re-soiling and turfing to make good this area.

The season for turfing would normally have passed but with the unnatural mild conditions we have been able to use this time to our benefit. The unseasonal weather conditions have resulted in unprecedented grass cutting in addition to leaf removal and greenstaff have also been spraying and slitting the greens to facilitate aeration and drainage.

The putting green area has also been receiving greenstaff attention. Trenches have been dug to assist drainage and chainsaw work is being undertaken to cut down and remove the tall conifer trees in this area. It is considered the presence and height of these trees are increasing shade and restricting sunlight and it is hoped their removal will prove beneficial to the health of the putting green. It may be that the practice net can be relocated to the space made available by the removal of the aforementioned trees and that will help put this reclaimed area to good use. The installation of yellow drainage piping and stone dressing has taken place to facilitate better drainage in this area. The adjoining hedge at the rear of the putting green has been removed, it was largely dead as a result of last year’s big freeze. The roots have yet to be dug out but when we make good this area we will do so with some of the reminder rolls of turf that James kindly supplied.

The unprecedented volume of rainfall has caused considerable problems to fairways and greens aprons and all efforts have been employed to make winter play possible.

It seems incredible that at the end of November, beginning of December, due to unseasonable weather (damp and humid), most of the greens have required repeated spraying to prevent ANTHRACNOSE. This is a disease that kills off meadow grass leaving bare patches; evidence of this condition is visible on a number of putting green surfaces.

We thank you for your support this year and look forward to keeping winter golf alive for as long as possible and indeed to preparing the course for the 2012 season ahead. On behalf of all members we’d like to acknowledge the work undertaken by Eugene (Head Greenkeeper) and his team who work hard on our behalf and deal superbly with ever increasing adverse weather conditions.
