Congratulations to Garfield Grimley and Stefan McNiell on winning their first round match in THE MAIL ON SUNDAY competition. The match was played at Portadown Golf Club on Sunday 21st March. This was a great win of 2 & 1 against the Portadown pairing of Gordon Willis and Keith Walker. It turned out to be a very close match with the Tandragee men being five over gross for the seventeen holes played. We wish them well for the next round.
The Holt Shield Team played their match at home against Malone on Sunday 18th April winning their match 3/2.
Steven Burns won his match 2 & 1 with a great round of 2 over for the holes played. Paul Ross won his match 3 & 2 having three birdies in his round which put him in the driving seat. Craig Black also had a good round winning his match 2 & 1. In a hard fought match Philip Dennison lost by the narrow margin of 2 down with Paul Hedley losing 7 & 6, unfortunately he came up against a player at the top of his game who was 2 under for his round. This competition is played on a league basis and our next match is against Masserene Golf Club.
The Jimmy Bruen Team played Dungannon at Portadown Golf Club on Saturday 15th May. Stefan McNeil and Ross Dutton won at the third tie hole to clinch the third match needed to progress to the next round. Warren Jardine and Ryan Harpur were 2up after 13 but lost on the first tie hole. Gordon Haire and Basil Brown had a comfortable 4&3 win and never looked in any trouble during their match. Jonny Quinn and Mark Bannerman had a 2&1 win never being down in the match. Stefan Greenburg and Philip Dennison were 3 down after 10, after fighting back to be all square after 14 they lost the 16th but were then called in.
Qualifying for the Irish Mixed Foursomes took place at Portadown Golf Club on 16th May. For the first time in many years Tandragee qualified in 2nd place. They now go on to play Killymoon who qualified in 3rd placed, this will be played at Portadown Golf Club on Sunday 30th May.
Congratulations again must go to Stefan McNeill and Garfield Grimley who have won another match in the Mail on Sunday competition. They played Lisburn Golf Club away at Lisburn and came through in what was a very close match. Lisburn looked like going 2 up at the 16th where they were on the green in two but Garfield chipped in for a winning birdie 3. At the 17th Stefan holed a long putt for a half making the match all square going to the 18th. Stefan and Garfield secured a par 3 to win the match by one hole. They progress onto the next round, we all wish them well in their next match.
The Holt Shield Team are still progressing well in the competition and with two matches to go are topping the table. The league points at this stage are: Tandragee 25pts – Malone 20pts – Masserene 18pts and Mount Ober 17pts. Team Captain Gordon Haire is delighted with the results so far, but also realises that the last two matches have to be won. Good luck to them for the rest of the competition.
The Jimmy Bruen Team played Knock at Edenmore on Sunday 6th June. In the first match Warren Jardine and Mark Bannerman got off to a bad start being 3 down after 6 holes. They fought back well but were eventually beaten 2&1. In the second match Philip Dennison and Stefan Greenburg were always in control of their match being 3up after 9 coming through to win 4&3. Match three saw Stefan McNiel and Ross Dutton in a very tight match which changed one way and then the other with Stefan and Ross coming through to win 2&1. In match four Gordon Haire and Basil Brown were 2up after 15 holes when they were called in after Emett Nixon and Jeff Forde won their match easily by 6&5 securing the three matches required. Tandragee now progress to the quarter finals when they will play Lisburn.
The Ulster Cup Team beat Greenisland 9/5, at Greenisland. The two matches needed by Tandragee were won by Jeff Forde who won 3&2 and Colin McKillop who won 5&4. We now play Ballymena in the fourth round.
The Holt Shield Team have won another match with Gordon Haire winning 5&4, Craig Black winning 3&2, Paul Ross got a half match and Stevie Burns won 2 up. Still leading Section 4 of the competition Tandragee play Malone away in their final match.

The Sam Rutherford Team played at home against Castleblaney on Sunday 20th June;
Philip Dennison and Gordon Haire won their match by four holes, in this match Castleblaney managed four birdies.
Philip Irwin and Jonny Quinn gained a half match after being three holes down earlier in the match.
Stefan Greenburg and Colin McKillop narrowly lost by one hole. They had a chance on the last to square the match being just over the back of the green and the Castleblaney pair in the hazard. Unfortunately they failed to get down in two and the hole was halved in fives.
Jeff Forde and Hammy Loney had a comfortable five hole win. With the return being played at Castleblaney on Monday 28th June at 5pm Tandragee are seven holes up.
Holt Shield Team – Tandragee v Malone on Sunday 27th June. Tandragee needed two matches to top the group and qualify. They did it in style beating the favourites at their own course, with the Malone team featuring four players in their all Ireland winning team.
Match 1 – Colin Bruce won 4 & 3 getting off to a strong start being 3up after 9. Match 2 – Philip Dennison had it all to do, his opponent was 2 under par after 10 and Philip was 4 down and eventually lost 4&3. Match 3 – Gordon Haire lost by 1 hole, unfortunately his putting let him down and decided the match. Match 4 – Craig Black played some good golf winning 2&1 and this sealed the second match required. Tandragee had not finished yet with Paul Ross playing his usual steady golf winning 4&3 to put the icing on the cake.
Malone Team Captain said that his was the strongest team he could have put out and going into the match he felt they could overturn the result, but on the day there was good golf on both sides and Tandragee were worthy winners.
Tandragee Team Captain Gordon Haire thanked all his players on their great result, this included his full panel of players who all played their part. All the players in each match whether playing or left out of different matches showed enthusiasm for the team and if a player was beaten the rest of the team rallied round after all this is a team event. This was a great result for Gordon and his team, we wish them well in their future matches.
The Senior Cup Team played their matches at Lurgan on Sunday 27th June. The morning matches took place between Tandragee and Banbridge.
Match 1 – Paul Topley beat Jonny Ward 2&1, Paul had an early lead in the match but around the turn and with a run of birdies from his opponent he was pegged back to only 1up with 2 to go. At the par 3, 17th hole Paul hit his tee shot short into the bunker while Jonny was in the rough just over the back of the green. Paul managed a great up and down which his opponent could not match giving Paul the win.
Match2 – Adam Brown beat Luke Woods 3&2. This was a battle between two up and coming stars. Luke is a very highly rated junior in Ulster golf and soon raced into an early lead. However Adam stuck to the task and with some stunning golf in the back 9, including a great sand save at the 16th managed to secure a great win of 3&2.
Match 3 – Stuart Paul lost to Rory Leonnard 3&2. From the start Stuart was always facing a difficult task against the inform Rory. The Lurgan man started well and never took his foot off the pedal and eventually won the match at the 16th.
Match 4 – Jamie Stothers beat Connor Doran on a first tie hole. Right from the start the match was full of great golf, Jamie was 1 down coming to the long sixteenth where he hit a great approach into 5 feet. Conner could not match this and hit his approach over the back into a very difficult spot, he could not get up and down and the match was all square with 2 to go. Jamie made a great sand save at 17 to stay all square, he had a close birdie putt at the last to win the match but just shaved the hole. With the match all square they headed for tie holes, they both hit their tee shots just short of the 1st green. Connor chipped to about 15 feet, Jamie then hit the shot of the day to about 1 foot. With an almost certain birdie for Jamie, Connor tried to make his putt, the ball just shaved the hole but ran a couple of feet past, he missed the one back giving Jamie the win.
Match 5 – Chris McGladdery – Chris struggled to find his useual steady form over the first 9 holes and his opponent raced into an early lead. Coming to the last three holes he was still 2 down but with a great comeback was all square after 18. They were about to go to tie holes but with Tandragee already 3 matches up it was not needed and the match was declared all square.
In the other morning match Lurgan defeated a very strong Warrenpoint team by 3/2 so would face Tandragee in the afternoon.
Match 1 – Paul Topley again led Tandragee to a great start and as with the morning Paul played superbly. His match was very close for most of the round until a charge on the back 9 saw him take a 2 hole lead to the 17th. Paul hit a great shot to the middle of the green and a safe 2 putt gave him a 2&1 win.
Match 2 – Adam Brown v Dave Sutton – As soon as the draw was made Adam new he faced a difficult task. Dave is one of the best amatures in the country and playing round his home course it was going to take something special to beat him. Adam hung on as long as he could but a superb eagle two at the 10th gave Dave a lead he would not surrender and he eventually ran out a 5 and 4 winner.
Match 3 – Stuart Paul could not find his form and was a couple of holes down by the turn and against a steady opponent could not find the birdies needed on the back 9 to overhaul the deficit, his opponent eventually getting a 4&3 victory.
Match 4 – Jamie Stothers took his great morning form into his afternoon match and raced into an early lead. With steady tee to green play and a superb short game Jamie always looked in control, by the turn he was 3 holes up and never looked like letting this slip. With another great long iron shot into the 16th to a few feet Jamie secured a 3&2 win to complete a great day for the Tandragee junior.
Match 5 – Chris McGladdery struggled to find his form all day. Playing a steady opponent any mistakes were heavily punished, and when the Lurgan man birdied the par 3 8th he was already 4up. Chris never gave up for a come back but unfortunately it was not to be and his opponent ran out a 4&3 winner.
Lurgan now go through to the Ulster Semi-finals on the back of this 3 to 2 victory. Our team did themselves proud all day, but in but in the end Lurgan around their own course proved just too strong.
Sam Rutherford: Tandragee v Castleblaney at Castleblaney. This match was played on 28th June.
Match 1 – In the top match Philip Dennison and Gordon Haire had a very close game winning by 2 holes.
Match 2 – Philip Irwin & Jonny Quinn had a tremendous win being 9 holes up, an excellent win by all accounts.
Match 3 – Mark Bannerman & Colin McMullan had a tough battle losing by 3 holes.
Match 4 – Hammey Loney & Jeff Forde also found the going hard losing by 4 holes
Overall this is a team event and Tandragee go through to the next round winning overall by 11 holes.
The Junior Cowdy Team also played Lurgan on 27th June, getting 2 matches out of 4 with only 3 holes down. This was a great result on a course playing it’s longest as it had been set up for the Senior Cup, the return will be played at Tandragee at 3. 30pm on Sunday 4th July.
Junior Cowdy: In the return match Tandragee came out victorious with the 2 1/2 matches required being achieved, with the last match being all square at the 15th when called in. The match was played in virtually gale force winds which made things very difficult but Tandragee seemed to cope just a little bit better. Team Captain Michael McCooe said how proud he was of the team and the way both teams conducted themselves on and off the course. The next match is against the winners of Portadown v Castleblaney.
The Ulster Cup Team captained by Colin Calvert have reached the quater – final of the competition following a busy weekends golf againdt Ballymena G.C.

Match 3 Gordon Haire & Stefan McNeill lost 3&2.
Match 5 Emmet Nixon & Jeff Forde already had secured a 4&2 win before match 3 had ended. This left the overall match all square.
Match 4 Stefan Greenberg & Philip Dennison won the deciding match 3&1.
Tandragee are now into the semi – final, team captain Jeff Forde said he was proud of the way his players battled all the way and that Lisburn were as gracious in defeat as Tandragee were in their victory. The Lisburn team captain wished Tandragee all the very best in their future matches.
Holt Shield Team: Tandragee played Donaghadee at a very wet and blustery Donaghadee on Sunday 18th July.
In the top match Philip Dennison lost 2&1 - Paul Ross was 4up after 9 holes and gained a half match – Craig Black was 3up after 10 holes but lost 2&1 – Emmett Nixon was beaten 6&5 and Gordon Haire won 1up. This unfortunately meant that Tandragee went out by the narrow margin of 2 holes.
Team Captain Gordon Haire thanked all his team members throughout all the matches in getting Tandragee so far in the competition, having topped their group in the qualifying stages winning all their matches both home and away. He wished Donaghadee all the best in the remainder of the competition and hoped they will go on and win the whole competition. Donaghadee Team Captain responded saying that Tandragee were by far the best team they had played in the competition. He also stated that after all the matches had played 9 holes it did not look good for his team and he thought they were down and out, but they responded by holing some very long and important putts and that was the only difference and that both teams played excellent golf under severe conditions.
The Junior Cowdy Team played Castleblaney at home on Friday 30th July getting a hard fought 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 result. The return match will be played at Concra Wood this Sunday 8th August. Unfortunately Tandragee lost out in the return match only winning 1 match and we now go out of the competition.
