The Ladies’ Electic competition was delayed by a couple of weeks because of the bad weather. However, the battle is now on. Details are posted in the Ladies’ Locker room. This Competition has now been cancelled.

The Ladies Branch have raised the sum of £200 for the Marie Keating Foundation. This was done by selling Breast Cancer badges in the form of golf clubs. A great effort by all concerned.

Congratulations to Jeanette Donald and Linda Stuart who won their first round match in the IRISH MAIL FOURBALL. The match was played on Monday 15th March at Portadown Golf Club and after a very hard fought match Tandragee came out winners on the 18th hole, against a very good Portadown pair of Dorothy Davis and Anne Walker, a very good win indeed. In the next round they play Mannan Castle at home, date still to be arranged. This was a great start to the season for our Ladies Branch, hopefully they can keep it going.

The weather was kind for the start of the season when Tandragee Ladies took to the course on Thursday 11th March. the first two competitions were over nine holes and much fun was had on both days. Lady Captain, Eileen Maginess welcomed all members back to the club and hoped the new season would not only produce good golf but also good weather. Bingo followed the presentation of prizes and rounded off two very enjoyable days.

Winner of the first event, a nine hole stableford was Lorraine Grimley with 24pts closely followed by Sally Ann Black on 23pts. There was one two with the pot going to Jennifer O’Brien.

On Thursday 18th March, the Ladies competed in a nine hole stroke competition with the winning team – Kathleen Donaghy, Marie Armstrong and Norma Wilson on a nett 20.5. Rnners up were the team of Lorraine Grimley, Margaret Kerr and Mary Lappin on a nett 23.34. Two’s went to Vera Brady, Karen Shaw and Lynn Moorehead.

Thursday 25th March saw a 12 hole Rumble, the highlight was a hole in one at the 14th by Linda Stuart who was warmly congratulated by the Lady Captain. Winners of the event were Iris Dougan, Shirley Cole and Marie Foley on 59. Runners up were Lavern Saunders, Julie Swaffield and Lorraine Moorehead on 57. There were no two’s so Janette Donald and Julie McCartan shared the pot. The quiz which followed generated some rivalry amongst the teams and friendly competition continued off the course . A most enjoyable evening was had by all.

Despite the exceptionally bad weather during the early part of the week, the ladies were blessed with sunshine on Thursday 1st April when they competed for the Club Prize in the first 18 hole competition of the year. Section Winners were – Section ‘A’ Barbara Richardson with a nett 76 beating Karen Shaw on the back 9 – Section ‘B’ Mary Lappin with a nett 75 – Section ‘C’ Lady Captain Eileen Maginess with a nett 77. There were no two’s.

Golfer of the year points went to Mary Lappin 5, Barbara Richardson 4, Karen Shaw 3, Eileen Maginess 2 and Linda Stuart 1.

The Eldon Cup and an 18 hole competition were played on 8th April. Results were:

Winner: Margeret Kerr with 36pts. 2nd Vera Brady with 34pts and 3rd Michelle Hazard with 32pts.

The Nellie Garrett competition was played on 15th April. Reults were:

1st H. Fleming & M. Kerr with 38pts 2nd E. Maginess & L. Saunders with 35pts. This means that Helen Fleming and Margaret Kerr go on to play at Knock probably some time in September.

The Junior Foursomes Team captained by Helen Fleming played their home match against Helens Bay Golf Club on Friday 16th April winning 2 matches out of 3. The team consisted of Jeanette Donald & Linda Stuart, Margaret Kerr & Helen Fleming and Anne Hall & Vera Brady. After the match the away team were very complimentary about the spirit the match was played in, also the catering they recieved both before and after the match. The return will be played at Helens Bay on 30th April. Team Captain Helen Fleming would like to thank Vera Brady for stepping into the breach at short notice. 

The PGA Tankard was played for on 22nd April, results were:

Winner Iris Dougan 37pts – 2nd Sadie Robinson 37pts beaten on last 9 – 3rd Liz Fleming 37pts again beaten on last nine. Twos went to Liz Walsh, Karen Shaw and Louise Lawson.

Monday 26th April was bleak for the Ladies teams. All lost their matches – Violet Leckey’s team played in the Challenge Cup: Lorraine Grimley’s team in the Minor Cup and Kathleen Acheson’s team in the intermediate Cup. However things picked up on the 30th when Helen Flemings team got through their return match against Helens Bay Golf Club in the Junior Foursomes. They will play either Malone or Shandon in the next round, good luck to them in their next round.

The Johnston Trophy was played on Thursday 29th with Linda Weir and Barbara Richardson coming in with a great score of 40pts. Just one shot behind were runners - up Sonia Rowe and Francis Kennedy on 39pts beating Sandra Sandford and Caroline Willis on the back 9.

A Ladies and Gents Pink Day in aid of the Marie Keating Foundation was played on 3rd May, results were:

Ladies: Winner L. Moorehead 40pts, 2nd S. Rowe 38pts, 3rd L. Duke 36pts and gross K. Shaw.

Gents: Winner G. Gray 42pts 2nd P. Cromie 39pts and 3rd B. Brown 39pts with J. Stothers winning the gross.

A Club Prize competition was played on 6th May with K. Shaw winning Section ‘A’ with nett 73, F. Kennedy with nett 70 and L. Moorehead with nett 72.

The Manchester Cup took place on Saturday 15th May. Winner was Janet Forbes on 41pts – 2nd Alison Chestnut 40pts – Gross Prize Michelle Hazard on 30 gross pts – Winner Sect ‘A’ Hazel Annseley 37pts – Winner Sect ‘B’ Orl O’Dowd 39pts – Winner Sect ‘C’ Vivian Faulkner 36pts. First 9 prize went to Anne Marie Cavanagh with 20pts, second 9 Shirley Dennison 21pts. Golfer of the year points went to Lorraine Morrow 5pts – Esther Paul 4pts – Kate Acheson 3pts – Michelle Hazard 2pts and Sadie Robinson 1pt. 

The Council Cup was played on 27th May, prize winners were:

Winner – Laverne Saunders nett 70, 2nd – Iris Dougan nett 71.

On Thursday 3rd June 59 ladies played in the first Myrtle Nelson Memorial competition. Myrtle was a long time member and a Past Lady Captain. Her husband Jim presented the trophy to the Ladies Branch, and some of her friends within the branch have had a seat placed at the 16th tee in her memory.

Results of the Competition were: Winner Laverne Saunders nett 72 - 2nd Liz Fyfe nett 72 and 3rd Karen Shaw again with a nett 72. 

The Junior foursomes Team lost out to Shandon Park. Margaret Kerr and Helen Fleming lost their match 3 & 1 which meant that Liz Fleming/Kate Acheson and Anne Hall/Lorraine Grimley were all called in on the 17th hole as Tandragee had ran out of holes. Team Captain Helen Fleming would like to point out that Shandon Park were gracious in their victory as Tandragee were in defeat. Everyone enjoyed the two matches and it was generally accepted that home and away matches were more favourable than having a neutral venue. She also wishes to thank everyone who played for her team.

Past Lady Captain Alice Hazard had her day on 8th June, her prize winners were; Winner M. Hanlon 37pts – Runner-up B. Ward 35pts. The front 9 went to L. Fleming and the back 9 to Lady Pesident Ruby Harvey.

The Jubilee Rosebowl was played for on the 10th June, results were;

Winner Margaret Hanlon on net 72 – 2nd Michelle Hazard net 73 beating Jennifer O’Brien on the last nine. 

Congratulations to the Lady Captain on winning the visiting Lady Captain’s Prize at Edenmore with 31pts over the 14 holes.

A Stableford Team Rumble took place on 17th June, winners were;

A. Hall, L. Magee and K. Acheson with a total of 84pts – 2nd were I. Campbell, L. Saunders and R. Harvey on a total of 82pts.

A Challenge Versus Par competition took place on Thursday 24th June with L. Fleming winning with a score of 5up, runner-up was M. Hazard on 4up.

 Lady Captain’s Day was held on 26th June. This was a memorable day for many reasons, not least was the much sought after selection of colour co-ordinated prizes chosen by the Lady Captain, Eileen Maginnis.

The day was glorious, the greens fast and many were the golf balls that headed off in all directions after landing on rock hard fairways. However winner of the Lady Captain’s prize winner Barbara Richardson who scored a terrific 40pts couldn’t find fault with the course. A long time member of the Club Barbara was delighted to have at last achieved her ambition of winning the Lady Captain’s top prize, a lovely piece of Radley cabin luggage which no doubt will come in handy for future holidays.

In her acceptance speech Barbara made special mention of her playing partners, Laverne Saunders and Lady President Ruby Harvey. She also thanked the Lady Captain for such a beautiful selection of prizes. Only one point seperated Barbara from runner-up Hilary Hamill who on 39pts pushed Liz Fleming into 3rd place with the better back 9. Also on 39pts were Julie McCartan in 4th place, Linda McMahon 5th and Iris Campbell 6th. The gross prize went to Karen Shaw with 30 gross pts. A delighted Nora Nelson, one of the branch’s longest playing members won the 36 handicap prize with 33pts while the committee prize went to Frances Clydesdaleon 36pts.

Anne Downey with 38pts was delighted to win the Past Lady Captain’s prize, as was Lisa Duke winning the front 9 with 21pts, just beating Margaret Andrews on the last six holes. The back 9 was won by Marilyn Warren also on 21pts while Vera Brady showed her skill on the putting green with 26 putts. Pauline Gingles from Armagh won the prize for visiting Ladies while Karen Shaw took the prize for the longest drive at the 11th. Margaret Hendron was winner of nearest the pin on the 14th.

Men’s winner was Ryan Conn with 33pts beating runner-up Club Captain James Magee on the better last 6. Jamie Stothers had a great round with a score of 40pts to win the Junior prize. Tim Evans, future son-in-law of the Lady Captain won the Visiting Men’s prize with 22pts over 12 holes, while a very special prize for putting was presented to grandson Jay and niece Rosin.

After welcoming special guests, Lady Captain Eileen made special mention of the greens staff and complimented them on the condition of the course, also Dympna and Angela in the Pro. shop. A big thanks went to Maurice and Eddie who erected the refreshments tent at the 9th hole and Matt, George, Linda and Jennifer who dressed the 1st tee box and the putting green. Thanks also went to the catering staff for the beautiful buffet which was enjoyed by all. Maurice and the bar staff were likewise thanked as were the flower ladies for their colourfull floral arrangements, and the Ladies committee for their support during the year. Lady Vice Captain Anne Hall was especially mentioned and thanked for her unstinting help and support.

Eileen also expressed pleasure in having  her family present on her special day, mentioning in particular her daughter Joanne and fiance Tim home from England, and sister Patricia and niece Rosin who travelled from Scotland.

Prior to her Lady Captain’s Day Eileen expressed a wish that there be no personal gifts, instead if anyone wished donations could be made to her chosen charity, the local branch of the NSPCC. She would like to thank all those who gave so generously, the total amount is still not known but will be published later.

After the Prize giving the evening continued into the wee small hours with dancing to The Jukebox Jurors – a perfect end to a perfect day.

A Club Prize was played for on 1st July, winners were: Section ‘A’  K. Shaw nett 73 – Section ‘B’  L. Duke nett 73 – Section ‘C’  l. Moorehead nett 70.

Lady Vice Captain Ann Hall was the proud winner of the Newell Trophy which took place on Thursday 8th July. A long time member of the club she said how delighted she was to at last get her name engraved on one of the trophies. Scoring 43 points Ann was was three clear of runner-up Iris Campbell who beat Laverne Saunders into third place on the better back nine. There was only one 2 which went to Liz Fleming.

Lady Captain Eileen Maginess made special mention of the competition sponsors Beauty Affair from Markethill and thanked them for their continued support. The large turnout of 61 players testified to the popularity of the competition and the wonderful prizes on offer.

The following week congratulations went to Maureen McRory who came in with 37 points to win the Mable Wilson Trophy, the second time she has done so. Lorraine Magee was runnerup with 36 points, while Marie Foley was the only Lady to get a two. Maureens handicap was cut from 31 to 30.

Lady President Ruby Harvey had her President’s Day on Thursday 19th August. With a mostly dry day the golf was enjoyed by a large number of the Ladies Branch with Ruby seeing off most of them at the 1st tee. Her evening started with a champagne reception followed by a meal for her guests in the restaurant.

Before the prize giving  Ruby said a few words recalling her early days in the hut before the present clubhouse was built. She said that from the start with Carmel Maney and Theresa McConville she made many friends over her time in the Club. She went on to thank everyone who made her day such a success, including the caterers for the meal, Maurice and his bar staff. Most importantly she thanked ‘her Jack’ for all his support  and patience during her first year as Lady President.

The prize giving then took place, the results were: Best score at the par 3’s K. Magaw – Comm. Prize E. Maginess 34pts – Senior Prize S. Cole 35pts – 1st nine M. Cloughan 19pts – 2nd nine F. Clydesdale 20pts – Gross M. Hazard 32pts – 4th nett L. Fyfe 36pts – 3rd nett L. Stuart 37pts – 2nd nett K. Shaw 39pts and the winner of the Lady President’s was S. Dennison with 39pts.

After the prize giving Ruby was presented a floral arrangement on behalf of the Ladies Branch and a Golf Bag with Lady President 2009 - 2012 on it from some her friends.

Ruby is a very popular and experienced member of the Ladies Branch and in her three years as President the Captains and committee of the Ladies Branch will be in safe hands.
