We wish everyone an enjoyable and successful year.

A function for the outgoing Captain Eddie Harbinson was held on Saturday 20th February. This was well attended by members, which reflected the popularity of Eddie both as a member of the Club and all the hard work he had done in  his year in office as Captain. This was a great night with some showing some fancy steps on the dance floor. The present Captain James Magee made a short speech outlining all of the above and thanking Eddie for all the help he has given him in his short time as Captain. There is no doubt as Past Captain he will continue to give advice where needed.  Also present was Past President Andrew Walsh, who held office for two years and was a great ambassador for the club during his term. A presentation of flowers was made to both their wives to recognise all they have put up with while their husbands were ”enjoying themselves”.

To make Eddie’s night complete he was also drawn out for the Joker getting the £50 for a plain card {coincidence}.

Congratulations to Ross Dutton who had a hole in one yesterday 21st Feb at the 9th hole {winter 5th}. He hit an eight iron – one bounce and in for an ace.

The Johnston Shield is nearing the end of the qualifying stage and believe it or not it looks like the cut could be an average of 27pts.  Weather permitting the matchplay will start on Sunday 28th February, 18 holes will be open for the matches, they will be: the same first 12 winter holes then normal 17-184-1-2. Please note that the last six holes -5-should only be used by those playing matches, this is to protect the course from the present weather conditions.

The qualifying stage is now over with 64 pairs making the cut, which worked out at exactly the average of 27pts. The top six pairs were:-

McDowell/Dennison with a best 5 from 6 cards score of 153.  Moorehead/Nixon with the same score of 153. Magee/Quinn with 151. Pedlow/Chambers with 150. Moorhead/Swaffield also 150 and Bannerman/Maney again on 150.  The matchplay will take form of 1st play 64th – 2nd play 63 and so on. This may seem rather easy for the top pairs, but history has shown that some don’t even get through the first round so they need to watch out.

With the Johnston Shield Matchplay well under way it has as predicted already thrown up some shocks with last years winners being put out in the first round. There will definately be more fancied pairs falling by the wayside as the competition progresses.

CAPTAIN’S DAY.

Club Captain James Magee had his big day on Saturday 31st July. Despite the weather forecast it turned out to be quite a good day with very little rain. It was a long day for James being there from early morning to see off most of the 260+ members and visitors. After the golf everyone enjoyed a drink and an afternoon snack provided by the Captain.

A few of the fourballs greeted by the Captain with the earlybirds shown in the 1st photo teeing off while most were still in bed (rather them than me).

Manager and all members of council for their work during the year.

Most importantly was thanks to his wife Lorraine and family for their support, patience and understanding during his year as Captain.
